Old Soldiers Never Die ... As a corporal - I can recall 'posting myself' in front of First Sergeant Allie H. Campbell; in those days you had to have 'permission' to get married ... I had to convince Allie that I could handle it first ... then he took me in to see the Company Commander to get his approval ... that's the way the Army was back in the early 1950's boys ... First Sergeant Allie H. Campbell was the BEST ... He went on to flight school and you all know his history from there ... I stayed in, went to OCS, then to flight school and had my two tours in Vietnam 66-67 1st Air Cav and CO, Co B Lancers, 158th AHB, 101st Abn 70-71 ... I called my old First Sergeant at Lake Charles last year and ... he remembered me ... He was a hero to so many of us - from a time and place long, long, long ago boys ... long ago ... I was heartbroken when I found out he had passed away ... I saw the 'Rattler' pocket-patch on Jim Moore's shirt at our Ohio River LZ Chapter Reunion and just happened to ask him if he knew Allie H. Campbell ... He did ... I know Allie loved the 'Rattlers' and that was all he talked about on the phone ... There are probably a lot of grandfather's walking around today - because of the ways of Allie H. Campbell - teaching us how to stay alive ... God bless him and all his loved ones ...

RATTLERS and FIREBIRDS....sad to say I was informed today of the death of two of our founding pilots, warrant officers from 1964. William Gault died of lung cancer in June 2001. Allie Campbell died on 1-3-2004 from cancer and diabetes. Allie jumped with the 82nd Airborne on June 6, 1944 as an 18 year old. Heros! RIP.
