Russell Robbins was the commander of the 94th Signal Detachment, our avionics section. Russell was flying as a door gunner on a 2nd platoon aircraft on a mission south of Chu Lai. A low level engine failure resulted in a crash. Lt. Robbins had either failed to buckle in or had unbuckled his seat belt. He was thrown out of the aircraft upon impact and died as he was struck by the rotor blade. The other three crewmen were unharmed. To see this aircraft, go to our home page, click on pictures, then click on R.J. Williams photos. This was aircraft 715. RIP!

I was paralized on may 2 1967 in a chopper crash over Chu Lai and have no memory of the crash, I had heard that a gunner was lost in the crash but was unsure. I was a infantryman on the chopper with 8 others i think, I tried to confirm a purple heart that General Walt from the USMC gave me on the ship Repose but was told a crash was not hostile action, I got the metal but no award was filled.
I thank all the chopper pilots and gunners who kept us save and pulled us out when we were hurt
Thank You
