Comment: Wanted to follow up: Grandpa has four grandkids, all grown now, and he inspired three of us to go into the Army ourselves (very much against his advice). I served five years as an infantry medic with 1-37 Armor and 3-41 Infantry in 1AD; my brother William did four years with the Oklahoma ARNG as a motor-transport operator, and my little sister Kim is starting off her third term as a captain with 2/1AD at Fort Bliss. She’s trying to make it to the Pentagon and loves the Army even when she hates it. Fourteen years in-service so I reckon she’s a lifer. I think Grandpa Art is motivating her still- he loved hearing from her more than the rest of us.

Art didn’t just serve, he raised a whole family and set us straight when our parents didn’t. I miss him and I really wish I could still talk to him.

Comment: Art was a good friend of mine. I remember him as a very good person. We had some great and fun times together along with other friends we made, even though we we weren’t in the best of places. RIP Art.

Comment: Grandpa died of COPD, renal failure and complications from his leg (circulatory impairment, gangrene and sepsis). He never really healed from his leg wound, and work as a postman finished off his hip and knee to the point it couldn’t be fixed. The last few years of his life were trapped in a wheelchair, and he kept getting septic. He died peacefully, but it wasn’t pretty.

I miss him a lot. He was my best grandpa.
