Accident Summary:

Aircraft, UH-1H, SN 67-17313, and crew were assigned to the mission of command and control for the Fifth Special Forces at Da Nang. They were inbound for the Fifth Special Forces pad, 2 miles out for landing when the aircraft had the engine failure. They had descended from an altitude of 3500' and were flying low level in order to clear Da Nang's control zone. At the time of the accident the pilot was at the controls and the aircraft commander was making the appropriate radio calls for landing at the Fifth Special Forces pad. The pilot successfully autorotated the aircraft to a rice paddy after several applications of collective had been applied to clear unsuitable landing areas. Upon touchdown the aircraft struck an obscured dike and caused severe damage to said aircraft. Subsequent damage resulted. The arrcraft came to rest after a short ground run in an upright position. The forward air speed at the time of the impact was approximately 10-15 kts.
